Lake Ice Monitoring

Understanding current ice conditions and monitoring changes in ice conditions are important for northern communities, and to resource development, environmental management, and climate change research. Using Earth observation satellites, real-time weather data, and local environmental knowledge, ice conditions for key lakes near the communities of Kangiqusualujjuaq, Kuujjuaq, and Kangirsuk are provided in this section.

Information on lake ice conditions from initial ice formation, complete ice cover, and ice break-up are provided. Individual observation of ice conditions are also supported by satellite imagery and in-situ weather data.

Select the desired study area, using the map (left) to obtain a summary of ice conditions from 2005 to 2012. Detailed ice condition data for each lake can be accessed through the “Ice Data” tab.
